Visit to Barangay 481, Zone 47

Together with some of my classmates we all visited Barangay 481, Zone 47 which is near UST to conduct an interview with Mr. Armando Tamayo.

BDRRM Kwentuhan

We interviewed him about the Barangay's Disaster Risk Reduction and Management. He said that mainly what they do is to make people aware of all the things that are happening to their community. They watch the news everyday and by that they make sure everybody would be vigilant to spread news and evacuate especially during typhoons since it is the most reoccurring type of disaster in their area. With that said they always try to make their area free from trash and they segregate their waste properly to avoid the drainage system getting clogged up from plastics and such. Another problem in their area is that the houses are close to each other meaning if there were to be fires it would be disastrous since it would spread fast as to make sure that these type of situations be avoided they make sure that they act as fast as possible to lessen any harm in their community. Lastly, cooperation since only few people are active their community it lessens the effectiveness of how their community can be.

Community Walk

We toured the area after the interview to see some of the Hazardous and Safest places in the community.

Hazardous Places
As we've toured the community I noticed some trash around these places also some wiring of the electricity dangling around.

Safest Place
The safe place I've observed was an area that has a really wide opening so when people get out it would be easier to evacuate.

Best Practices
While we were waiting for the kagawad I noticed that there were people segregating the pet bottles from the trash and moving it to the containers. Another thing that I've seen is they have numbers for you to be able to contact the Barangay officials and also the posters of reminders of what to do in an earthquake.

Reflection

From the interview and the community walk I've come to reflect on how people should be more active on the many seminars and activities the community proposes since it is a way for them to be more educated on what to do in calamities and a way for them to make changes in their community to avoid disastrous situations. You also have to track the news for more details on what to do since it the action plan would depend on the kind of calamity that would occur. As of practices people should also know their responsibility as part of the community they shouldn't depend only on the barangay officials for them to make a move or to help the community as is, they also have to help themselves.
Preparedness is key to make the community effective executing the action plans every situation so it is also very important to always remind everyone whether there will or will not be any calamities or emergency situations.
